My Strengths and Weaknesses of Public Speech – Homework 0

My Strengths and Weaknesses of Public Speech – H0

應外三 49582005 洪新皓 David

I. My Strengths:

  1. Appropriate voice: If I have to deliver any message or speech in any occasions, I will give an appropriate voice without fears. Before, I used to remind myself of speaking at much volume to make audience understand, and now I keep the good habit.
  2. Positive attitude: Before delivering a speech, I always keep in a positive attitude toward the opportunity that I am able to speak to public. Despite some unexpected moments or embarrassments, everything can be a good learning material.
  3. Visual aids: I like to use visual aids to help me arouse audience's attention. Especially, I often work as passionate as I can to accomplish my sense of achievement.

II. My Weaknesses:

  1. Lack of eye contact: Most of times I will be concentrate on the audience right in front of me, so audience at both sides will be likely to be neglected.
  2. Lack of speaking fluency: I am usually over-strict in correcting grammar mistakes, and then getting stuck off and on.
  3. Wrong pronunciations and intonations: To speak frankly, I seldom receive English listening programs, and seldom practicing English with others. I must be hard-working on it to improve my pronunciations and intonations.
  4. Over-apprehension: If I feel the apprehension, the arrangement in my brain immediately will be blank out, and even worse. It often happens to me because of insufficient preparations.

III. Analyze the audience

A. Summary description of key audience characteristics:
According to my understanding, I conclude that most audience members are similar to each other and to me. We are all students at National Taipei University. Most of us are around twenty-one years old, which implies that we have the same knowledge background and tend to share the common view. Since the audience is come from Department of Foreign Languages and Applied Linguistics, there are more women than men in the class. To my observation, most of us are perhaps middle-class Taiwanese.

B. Subject-specific data

1. The average audience member's knowledge of the subject is likely to be moderate because this issue is more and more influential to our environmental problems nowadays. Most of us are Bachelor of Arts not Bachelor of Science, though.

2. The average audience member's interest in this subject is likely to be moderate because this is a serious topic, and people do not think it as a practical method. However, it is just a prevailing concept for the generations to solve the environmental difficulties.

3. The average audience member's attitude toward my subject is likely to be positive because we really need to solve the problems which are obviously facing us.

4. My initial credibility with the audience is likely to be low because I am not an environmental-savvy; however, I do pay attention to the field of sustainable development.

Although my audience knows the term "sustainable development," they probably do not understand its core. I will give them some real examples to explain how to carry out the sustainable development and to develop my audience's interest during the speech.
