My strength & weakness of public speaking (HW2)

My Strength & Weakness of Public Speaking 49582049 Ken Huang黃奕瓏

I. Strength

A. Pronunciation
Professor Zuo once said that I have a good pronunciation when speaking on the stage.
I am sure that I am not good enough, but I became more confident to do a speech with her words.
I always try my best to speak slow and clear, and make sure my audience can undertand my words.
B. Fearlessness
I am not afraid of making mistakes on the stage.
If I did something wrong on the spot, I can handle it well and make the speech goes on like nothing had happened.
If my preparation was well done, my speech will be powerful.
C. Proper Eye Contact
I believe that having a good eye contacts is one way to show that the speaker is credible, so I usually have a good eye contacts with my audience.

II. Weakness

A. Nervousness Makes Everything Wrong
When I was too nervous, there is no any strength in my speech.
Usually caused by the pressure of teachers and my lack of preparation.
B. Poor English
Due to my nervousness, I will make a lot of grammar mistakes when speaking in stage.
C. Voice
The tune of my voice is like loose strings, and my sound is too small.

My strength and weakness of public speech

應外三 49582036 呂偉萱

. Strength

1. appropriate voice: Even if I am nervous, I still try my best to keep my voice loud and clear enough to all the audience. I think it is the basic element to catch other's attention and it's also a politeness. I wouldn't murmur at the stage as though I forget what I should say next.

2. smile: I will keep a smile on face when I stand on the stage. For one thing is to be polite and friendly to audience; for the other thing is to cover up my nervousness and to be confident.

3. preparation: If there is enough time for me to prepare the speech, I would write a rough draft. I would not memorize the whole article; instead, I highlight the key points and supporting ideas. It will help me have a clear concept about the procedure of speech.

. Weakness

1. eye contact: At the beginning of speech I do have some eye contacts with audience. As speaking going by, I would look at the desk, floor or any corner especially when I am thinking. Usually, I tend to have eye contact with my good friends that will help me manage stage fright.

2. pronunciation: Sometimes audience can't catch my idea because my pronunciation is vague and not well tuned. I have serious problems in utter [ ar] and [ e] sound and [i] sound. Poor pronunciation sharply weakens my confidence and attraction of public speech.

3. logical system: If there is no enough time for preparation, the speech may out of order. I would say whatever ideas that bumps up into my head when I am so nervous that I forget the order of speech I may present my thoughts in a non-logical way.

4. diction: I suddenly use professional or advanced words in the speech. Furthermore, I would say same conjunction over and over again.

5. overlap: The sentence or ideas I've describe sometimes show up again in the speech. This may owing to poor preparation and nervous.

My Strengths and Weaknesses of Public Speech

Strength

A. Eye contact

When delivering a public speech, some people will be too shame or too nervous to face to their audience. In fact, I am that kind of person who has stage fright too. However, in order not to make my audience senses the horribly tension inside my mind, I will make eye contact to tell them "yeah, I am talking to you". Also, I think that seeing the concentrative faces will gain me courage to speak out loud.

B. Gesture

When it comes to the speech which needs some movements, I am able to speak through my body language or even the eye contact. Doing some gestures helps me a lot. Doing so, I can understand what subject I am talking at this moment, and then I can have a clear picture to make the speech going step by step in mind.

C. Imagination

To smooth my nervousness, I will image myself talking on the stage and imitate giving a speech. Then I can get the picture, seeing how I should act, with what kind of attitude should I maintain, and then adjusting the speech to be relating to the topic.

Weakness

A .Nervousness

I always do my best not to expose my nervousness to the audience. But every time I getting on stage, it feels like there are butterflies in my stomach. It just shows up when I utter the first sentence. Nervousness causes different shortages in my public speeches which I list them in this category.

a. Subconsciously gesture

To make me feel easy, I will automatically produce some small movements during speeches.

b. Interruption

The nervousness reduces my confidence and interferes in the whole delivering process .

1. Wrong pronunciation

2. Hesitate to use long terms

B. Wrong verbal form

When giving a speech, I often drop the ending morpheme sound. It does not mean I misunderstand the tenses. I have to try to adjust the speaking speed.

Conclusion

It is a difficult task for me giving public speech in the past. While, after taking a few speaking classes, I realized that calmly talking to the audience on stage was merely essential, and was not sufficient to become a good speaker. I learn that a good speaker should possess the abilities of showing his/her power and passion; the basic and essential technique is give a clear and organized concept through speeches instead of doing chitchat.

My strength and Weakness of Public Speaking - H0

49582010 應外三 林昱君 Rebecca

Strength

1. Voice I know I have to speak in a loud and clear voice so that my audience will pay their attention to me. What's more, if I use my voice appropriately, they may feel they're getting involved in my speech.

2. Preparation If I know the topic before delivering the speech, I will prepare data which related to my topic and practice it many times. This will enhance my credibility and let me feel more relieved.

3. Nervousness This is both my strength and weakness. I am the kind of person who gets nervous very easily. So before delivering a speech, I will think about if I am ready or not over and over.

Weakness

1. Lack of body language I will become very stiff when I am on the stage. I don't know how to use body language appropriately which may help me delivering a more lively speech.

2. Lack of self-confidence I have less self-confidence, so I will be affected by the audience easily. This makes me feel helpless when I am on the stage.

3. Too nervous As I said, I become nervous very easily. This will greatly affect how I act on the stage. I may shiver, and stammer. The worst situation is that I may forget everything I would like to say.

4. Lack of vocabularies Sometimes I can't remember some vocabularies, so I may stammer and take time to think about those words on the stage.

5. Wrong pronunciation and intonation When I am on the stage, because lacking of practice, I might speak English with wrong pronunciation and strange intonation.

My Strength & Weakness of Public Speaking

My Strength & Weakness of Public Speaking 應外三 49582018 林依亭 Claire

Strength

  1. Voice Volume: I'm proud of my voice volume for it always serves as a strong backup. The louder the voice is, the more composed and confident I will be. It spares me great stage-fright but brings power. Powerful volume always catches audience's attention longer.
  2. Facial Expression: Once I feel nervous, I tend to smile. Perhaps it's not a strength for some others, it's quite a good relief to ease the state of nerve for me. I believe that one with smile is more accessible than another with a rigid face. It shortens the distance between the audience and me.
  3. Clear Pronunciation: I lay great emphasis on clear pronunciation. For me, clear pronunciation is a crucial element to speech. I am able to balance fluency and correct pronunciation during my speech.

Weakness

  1. Deficient Preparation: I am not a serious person in many ways, so as to my attitude. I am always deficient in preparation and that makes a fatal defect of me.
  2. Too Little Gesture: I notice that most of my classmates use proper gesture when conveying their speeches. Compared to them, I found myself badly lacking proper gesture. I don't even remember whether I had moved or not.
  3. Unnecessary Touches: I have a bad habit when I am anxious. I subconsciously touch my nose or other parts on face to shift my emotion. It usually emerge in the beginning.. After I adapt myself to the speech (or the atmosphere), I no longer have any movement.
